De WHW is de meest belopen lange afstand wandeling van Schotland. Het is een wandelroute van 153 km die te doen is in 10-11 dagen en laat je op een prettige manier kennis maken met de Highlands. Voor de wandelaars die niet de hele route willen lopen is het ook mogelijk om bijvoorbeeld het laaste stuk te lopen. Een mooi stuk om te doen is de laatste 53 km vanaf Bridge of Orchy naar Fort William. Dit is tevens het mooiste stuk van de route dwars door het grote veenplateau van het Rannoch Moor. Aan de rand hiervan staat de Buachaille Etive Mor een van de meest fotogenieke bergen van schotland. Na deze woesternij komt een wat ruwer stuk in de route. De beklimming van de Devil’s Staircase brengt je uiteindelijk door een prachtige vallei richting het eind van de tocht onder aan de voet van de machtige ben Nevis.
