Met de West Highland Way loop je over een stuk geschiedenis. Het pad maakt gebruik van:
– Oude veedrijverroutes. Hier over werd het vee (Highland Cow’s) en de schapen naar de markten in de Lowlands gehoed.
– ‘Wade ways’, oude militaire wegen, die na de Jacobiet-opstanden in de Highlands in 1715 en 1745 werden aangelegd om de Highland-clans onder de duim te houden.
– Oude koetswegen
– Niet meer gebruikte spoorwegen
De West Highland Way (WHW) laat je op een prettige manier kennis maken met de Highlands. De ingekorte versie die wij aandoen loopt door een overweldigend landschap. Zo is er het grote veenplateau van het Rannoch Moor. Een woestenij waar men twee eeuwen geleden een weg omheen legde. Er overheen was destijds niet mogelijk. Aan de rand staat imposant de Buachaille Etive Mor. Een van de meest fotogenieke bergen van Schotland. Zijn naam is Gaelic voor ‘Grote Schaapsherder van Etive’ en hij lijkt te waken over de grootte moerassige vlakte van Rannoch Moor. De tocht eindigt in Fort William.Vandaar uit is de bergwandeling naar de top 1344 meter hoge top van de Ben Nevis een klassieke afsluiting van de West Highland Way.
