Het is een andere bewoording voor het grootste zoogdier van Groot-Brittannië, het Edelhert (Red Deer). Van oorsprong is het een bewoner van open bossen. Maar natuurlijke bossen zijn in Schotland zo goed als verdwenen. Van de naaldboomplantages -monotone dichte bosopstand met één soort naaldboom- moet deze ‘monarch’ weinig hebben. Dit hert heeft zich aangepast naar de meest voorkomend en karakteristieke landschapstype in Schotland, die van het openterrein in de bergen.
Zo heeft ook het Edelhert zich in Nederland aangepast aan de bosarme leefomgeving. Met dat verschil dat de Edelherten in Schotland het in de zomer hogerop zoeken naar winderig plaatsen om de Midges te vermijden. In de winter, als er sneeuw ligt op de bergen, vind je ze beneden in het dal om daar voedsel te zoeken.Meest imposant is het mannelijke hert met een schofthoogte van anderhalf meter en zijn grote gewei. Het mannetje wordt in het Engels de ‘stag’ genoemd. Het gewei kan 70 tot 120 centimeter lang worden. Het groeit elk jaar aan en is op zijn grootst in de zomermaanden, klaar voor het gevecht om de vrouwen in september. In het voorjaar wordt het gewei afgeworpen.Er zijn geen natuurlijke vijanden voor een volwassen Edelhert in Schotland. De Wolf, Lynx en de Beer zijn allemaal uitgeroeid. Alleen een Vos of een Steenarend vormt een bedreiging voor een jong Edelhert. Eenmaal volwassen kan een Edelhert wel vijftien jaar oud worden. De tijd van het jaar, waarin de herten bereidt zijn te paren is de bronsttijd en loopt globaar van 15 september tot begin oktober. De hinden zijn bronstig gedurende een paar dagen en de herten zijn enkele weken in staat van opwinding. Algemeen geldt dat de de bronst duurt van midden september tot begin oktober.
